Lucid and Nectar are top mattress brand competitors. Lucid is the bargain choice offering more mattress options. And with tons of options, it’s easier to find a mattress that will address your sleeping needs. We’d like to see Lucid offering more personalized mattress options. It has over 25 mattress types, so you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store when shopping for your own mattress.
Nectar, on the other hand, is a more expensive brand. Though it’s not premium, it costs a tad higher than Lucid. It may not offer as many options as Lucid. But the mattress advertises itself as a cooler option. The brand seems to focus on this aspect.
In this article, we will see the difference between these two popular mattress brands. And we’ll explore if the claims are true.
Nectar vs Lucid: spotting the differences
Composition
All of the Nectar mattresses provide mid firm to firm comfort. And as we have mentioned earlier, Lucid offers several types of mattresses. Each of them offers a different type of comfort. From plush, med firm to firm, it offers more variety than Nectar. So in this part of the article, we will be comparing the medium-firm to a firm mattress of the Lucid vs the Nectar mattress. In this way, we will be able to come up with a fair and viable comparison.
A foam mattress is constructed in a way that it has three parts- the cover, the comfort layers, and the core. While both these mattresses have memory foam in their comfort layers, the difference lies in how many layers there are and what material is used in the support core.
Support core
Nectar has 6 inches of HD polyfoam while Lucid has 7.5 inches of HD support foam of its support core.
Comfort layer
Nectar is composed of more layers. The comfort layer consists of 3 types of memory foam. The total thickness of these memory foam layers is about 8 inches. The Lucid, on the other hand, features 2.5 inches of gel memory foam as its comfort layer.
So if you do the math, the Nectar definitely has a thicker mattress because of the additional layer of different types of memory foam. And this also makes the mattress heavier by 19 lbs.
Breathability
As per the advertisement, Nectar seems to be the more breathable option. Let’s see how it is advertised. Then we’ll tell you what we have experienced.
As per the advertisement, Nectar is ideal for sweaty sleepers because of these two features. One. It makes use of a cotton and Tencel fabric as its cover. And this type of fabric wicks away moisture and sweat. And if you live in a hot climate, Tencel is one of the more appropriate fabrics for your beddings. This allows good airflow and circulation.
Secondly, the comfort layer of Nectar has quilted memory foam. The structure of this memory foam enables better airflow. So combine these two technologies then you get a rather cool Nectar mattress. And also, the 2-inch layer of support core made of dynamic response foam works like magic when coupled with the memory foam layers.
This keeps the body cool by avoiding sinking. So it is supposed to amp up the cool factor for the mattress.
Now, let’s go on with the Lucid mattress. Lucid also has a Tencel fabric cover. The difference is that it makes use of pure Tencel while Nectar has a combination of Tencel and cotton. The comfort layer of lucid has an all-gel memory foam layer. This type of memory foam is supposed to provide a cooler sleep.
Our verdict? If we are to choose between the two, the Nectar provides a cooler sleep compared to the Lucid mattress. So the advertisement is indeed true. However, if you have more need for cooler sleep, you might want to opt for the more premium Nectar mattress, the Nectar Premier, or the Nectar Copper. These two Nectar mattresses have a higher breathability score and can wick better than the Nectar mattress.
Motion transfer
Since both of these mattresses have memory gel in their comfort layers, you can expect it to be great in isolating motion. So we don’t have any complaints. Both mattresses were able to deliver a great score for motion isolation. Even the plush mattress of Lucid was able to isolate motion rather well.
Pressure relief
We find the Nectar mattress suitable for side, back, and stomach sleepers, but with a few considerations. The mattress provides a nice cradling cushion that can support the spine for side sleepers. It provides decent support for the shoulder and the hips. And since it is medium-firm, you will not sink deep into the cushion. Even those who weigh more than 200 lbs will still be able to find the mattress comfortable for side sleeping.
However, for back and stomach sleepers, we demand it for those who weigh less than 230 lbs. Otherwise, you can sink into the mattress. And the heavy people will find it too soft.
Lucid, on the other hand, is also nice support for the body, the medium-firm mattress of the brand is also ideal for side sleepers. It can provide ample sport for the shoulders and aligns the spine. An advantage of Lucid though is that since it has an array of mattress options with varying materials and firmness levels, everyone will be able to find the type of comfort that they need.
Sex
This is also a special consideration when it comes to couples. Sadly, these two mattresses did not fare well when it comes to supporting this kind of activity.
Both the Lucid and the Nectar lack the springiness and the bouncy feel that couples seem to enjoy.
The edge retention of the Nectar mattress is fair while that of Lucid is below average. Do couples have to stick to the center of the bed or they will likely slide out of the mattress.
And for the Nectar mattress, couples can sink deep into the cushion since it might not be able to support the weight of two people on top of each other.
Unpleasant odors
Off-gassing is a major concern when buying a mattress. That strong chemical smell of VOCs can also be harmful to your body. So how did each mattress fare?
The Lucid mattress has a very strong off-gassing smell upon unboxing. But luckily, the smell is quick to dissipate after 24 hours. You need to air out the mattress in an open area or leave it in a room with the windows open.
The Nectar mattress, on the other hand, has the least off-gassing smell. And that faint smell is also quick to dissipate in 24 hours.
Change of motion
This is perhaps one of the limitations of memory foam mattresses, the ease of motion. The material makes it hard to change positions or to get out of bed. Memory foam has limited responsiveness. So we cannot give a 5 out of 5 for any of the two brands in this category,
But those who are lighter will be able to change position easier on a Nectar mattress. But heavier users will find it hard to move.
`The Lucid mattress, on the other hand, performed better in this category. We find it easier to change movements without sinking deep into the mattress. But buy the plush mattress from Lucid and you will have a very difficult time changing positions or getting out of bed.
OVERALL
- In terms of breathability, the Nectar mattress will be able to provide a cooler sleep.
- The Nectar mattress is best for side sleepers. It can support the shoulders, hips and align the spine without the person sinking into the mattress. Lightweight back and stomach sleepers might also be able to find this mattress comfortable.
But those who weigh more than 200 lbs will surely sink into the mattress. So the Nectar is best for the average size person. Those who weigh less than 130 pounds will also not find this comfortable. It will be too firm for them
- The Lucid mattress can offer customized comfort. Since the brand offers several mattress options, you will likely be able to find a more comfortable mattress regardless of your sleeping style and weight.
- None of the mattresses are great for sex. You will have to choose a mattress that offers more bounce. As such, the Saatva or the Helix Dusk are among the top choices.
- In terms of durability, we are not too confident about how long the Lucid mattress will be able to hold up. This is more of a budget-friendly option. It’s the type of mattress that you buy whenever you need one asap. The Nectar mattress, on the other hand, is a more durable option.
- In terms of warranty, you can get more value for your money from the Nectar mattress. Lucid has a 10-year warranty while Nectar offers a lifetime warranty.
